Debating Leadership: Was Creon justified in his punishment of Antigone?
While Creon was the indisputable leader of Thebes, is it possible his tragic flaw caused him to go too far in regard to his punishment of Antigone? Your assignment is to defend your position on whether or not Creon actions are justifiable. You will be assigned a team to either defend Creon's decisions as appropriate or to defend Creon's decisions as inappropriate. As a team, you must decide on your opening statement and three points that support your argument. You will work with your team to prepare an outline and gather evidence to support your arguments.
We will hold an official class debate in which you and your team will be scored on the merits and effectiveness of your argument and objections, teamwork, and organization. This debate will serve as the summative assessment of your understanding of Oedipus Rex and Antigone. You and your team will receive the same grade based on your performance on the day of the debate. You will need to divide your group members into smaller “teams” who will debate each main point. Please note: The team that wins the debate will receive “first choice” of proposition/opposition for a current event debate.
