Poem in Your Pocket
I can't take credit for this great idea. Poem in Your Pocket is actually a real movement/day celebrated in April (National Poetry Month) each year. You can read about it from Poets.org.
Why do I have to do this? |
How do I do this? |
How do you get better at any skill? You practice. To help you become more comfortable reading and discussing poetry, we will conduct our own version of this movement. Like Billy Collins said, we have to find a way to "lower your poetry deflector shields." As long as you are participating (following the rules and participating in class discussions), this will be a LOW/NO pressure activity to expose you to poetry. Invest in the discussion, and you will gain confidence in reading and thinking about poems.

At least once a week, I will give you a poem on a small piece of paper. You should fold it up and keep it (wait for it) in your pocket. (Feel free to snap a picture of it to keep it on your cell phone. The point is to keep it with you and pull it out in idle moments to read it and think about it.
