Task Advancement DatesUnless otherwise requested by your group via email, I will advance everyone to Task 2 on 3/2/15 at 8 am and to Task 3 on 3/19 at 8am. If your group wishes to advance early, please elect one group member to send me an email with the subject line VTC Move Ahead Request. In the body of the email, please state that you have checked with each group member for permission to be advanced. I must advance the entire group together, and once that happens, no player on the team can return to unfinished work.
The game will end the morning of 3/25 at 8am. Your leadership log is due on April 10, 2015. Please bring a typed, hard copy to class. |
TASKS, ASSIGNMENTS, and STUDENT HANDOUTS & RESOURCES
TUTORIAL:
- QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
- Read the overview and rules page of the website.
TASK ONE: Business: Students discover that the Virtual Team Challenge is a tool
to introduce them to the world of business. They get an
introduction to some of the language of business and also
learn the keys to business success.
- Task One Handouts: Problem-Solving & Environmental Awareness
- Objective: Students will learn that a business is formed by an individual or group in order to pursue shared economic goals.
- VIDEO TRANSCRIPTS: Message from the CEO & Breaking News Story
- An address from your CEO is available on the official Virtual Team Challenge website. You should review it before logging into the simulation. Once you have listened to what he has to say, login to the simulation to get the competition started.
- After students are logged-in to New City, the first step is to check in with the team assistant for the fictitious company, Professional Services, LLP, that their team works for at the team office. Once their team assistant gives them directions, they can leave the office and enter into New City by left-clicking on the 'doormat' in front of the sliding glass doors.
- Remember, as you begin the game, you are part of a team that is actually part of a larger organization, a professional services firm. So, the first step is to check in with your boss once you arrive in New City. You work for the Chief Executive Officer, or CEO, of the company. The first step is to get directions for your task from your team assistant, Evelyn Hu. Left-click on Evelyn when you first enter the team office to begin.
TASK TWO: Ethics: Students discover that ethics is a consideration not only in business, but in their day-to-day lives. They get an introduction to some of the language and concepts of ethics and social responsibility -- and learn keys to ethical decision making.
- Task Two Handout: Portable Skills
- Objective: Students will learn that: An ethical decision is one that upholds principles of ethical action - otherwise known as 'ethical principles'.
- VIDEO TRANSCRIPTS: Message from the CEO & Breaking New Story
- Log onto the official Virtual Team Challenge website (www.virtualteamchallenge) and listen to your CEO's opening briefing. He will give students important information about their upcoming task.
- Remember, as we begin, you start in your team office. Talk to Evelyn and then exit the team office and make your way up to City Hall. After you get your briefing from Will Standon, someone will walk up to you and ask you for a favor. Login, get the game started, and see what he has to say.
- As you make your way, be mindful of the focus: ethics and ethical dilemmas.
TASK THREE: Decision-Making: Students discover that New City introduces them into the world of decision-making, as well as business. They get an introduction to some of the concepts of making decisions, and also learn some keys to successful decision-making in real life, as well as in New City.
- Task Three Handout: Portable Skills
- Objective: Students will understand that: The process of decision-making, selecting a course of action from multiple options, can be aided through by conducting a 'cost benefit analysis'.
- VIDEO TRANSCRIPTS: Message from the CEO & Breaking New Story
- Log onto the official Virtual Team Challenge website (www.virtualteamchallenge) and listen to your CEO's opening briefing. He will give students important instructions about their mysterious upcoming task.
- Your next task may the most important you have to complete in the simulation. However, you will be presented with an entirely different kind of decision to make. How and why is this task different? What did you rely on to make decisions in previous tasks? What might you have to rely on now?
Leadership Log: Virtual Team Challenge
The following prompts should be addressed in your VTC leadership log that is due in hard copy form (typed) on April 10. Your writing should be thoughtful and deliberate. To address the popular question, "How long does this need to be," the answer is "Long enough to offer thoughtful discussion of the prompts and any other pertinent information."
You may wish to consider the following questions as you write your leadership log:
You may wish to consider the following questions as you write your leadership log:
- What were some of the challenges and obstacles you faced? How did you overcome them?
- What were some lessons learned in terms of collecting data, research, decision-making?
- What were some lessons learned in terms of group dynamics, organization, and communication? Remember that yourleadership logs will be published on your portfolio website; keep comments academic and constructive.
- If you had control of the game, what aspects of the simulation would you change? Why? Please keep this academic - we don't want to hear that there should be more avatars to choose from.
- What is your leadership take away? Did you learn anything that you didn't know before, or did the simulation confirm beliefs you already hold? How did the simulation sharpen your understanding of leadership?
- KEEP THIS ACADEMIC - Do you think this simulation was an effective use of your time? Do you think it should be something that is repeated for future ALA freshmen in preparation for real field experiences? If you don't think this activity was valuable, please keep your response thoughtful and academic, and offer reasons, as well as potential alternatives. This should not be a venting forum for frustrations.
